π Reading Time Calculator β Words per Minute Estimate
Paste any text and set a reading pace. The calculator counts words and estimates minutes and seconds at that speed, with a speaking-time comparison.
How it works
- Paste the passage you want to time. Empty lines are ignored for the word count.
- Set words per minute. 238 is a common silent-reading average; use about 150 for a presentation.
- Press Estimate reading time. Minutes and seconds are words divided by your pace.
Examples
- 238 words at 238 wpm is about 1 minute 0 seconds.
- 500 words at 200 wpm is 2 minutes 30 seconds.
- A 1,200-word post at 250 wpm is 4 minutes 48 seconds.
Frequently asked questions
What pace should I use?
For silent blog reading, 200 to 250 words per minute is a practical range. Aloud narration is slower, often 130 to 160 words per minute.
Does punctuation change the count?
Words are split on whitespace. Punctuation attached to a word stays with that word, so the count matches a typical article word counter.
Is the text uploaded?
No. Counting and division happen in the page. Closing the tab clears the text.
